But you just don’t know how to make any of it happen, and you feel stuck.
That’s where I come in.
Hi, my name is Caroline Pilling and I love teaching other photographers how to make their photography businesses profitable and popular.
Way back in 2006, I was 10 years into a career in contracts management, earning a decent salary and working on some big international projects that saw me travelling to exciting places like South Africa, India and across Europe.
The problem was that I had no interest in the industry I worked in and a recent job move had left me feeling under-utilized and demotivated. I was bored and miserable with my life.
So I decided to do something about it, and start a photography business, with dreams of one day making it my full time job.
The only problem was, I’d never run a business before and, although I was enthusiastic and excited, I was also hopelessly clueless about what it took to make one successful.
I made the same mistakes that most photographers make, and priced myself based on what everyone else was charging, then sat back and waited for people to find me and be wowed by my pictures. I’m sure you can guess how successful this strategy was!
Luckily for me, I realised pretty quickly that I had to level-up my business abilities. So I made it my mission to learn everything I could about marketing, entrepreneurship and building a business, and more specifically, how it could be applied to a photography business.
It paid off because I quickly grew my business from zero clients to fully booked, and was able to quit my day job to do photography full time, just 9 months after launching from scratch.
The reason I was able to achieve this wasn’t because I was an amazing photographer - in fact my work was pretty dreadful back then! It was because I invested heavily in educating myself on how to succeed as a photographer, marketing and business in general.
I'm very much a believer in the adage that "success leaves clues", and that the best way to become good at something is to learn from those who are already where you want to be, or who have the skills you aspire to have. By doing this I quickly discovered the key elements to every successful photographer’s story: branding, marketing and pricing for profitability.
Leveraging these things allowed me to grow a fully booked wedding photography business from scratch, in less than a year. Since then I’ve opened two portrait studios (in two very different niches) and enjoyed the freedom and fulfillment of being my own boss and earning a living doing something I love.
And, much to my surprise, I discovered that I really loved marketing. In fact, I came to realise that I actually loved it even more than photography. Yes, I know this makes me sound a little odd!
For most photographers marketing is hard, boring and complicated. All they really want to be doing is taking pictures.
This gave me an idea: “What if I took the modern marketing principles I’ve learnt and showed other photographers how to apply it to their business?”
“What if I could give photographers the ongoing inspiration, necessary information and help with implementation for their marketing, so they didn’t have to do it alone?”
“And what if all this could help them to book more clients and make more money in their photography business...so they can get back to doing what they love?”
And so, Photopreneurs was born.
I specialise in the topics you need to succeed as a photographer in today’s overcrowded market: branding yourself to stand out from the competition, marketing yourself effectively to attract better clients, and pricing yourself so that you make higher sales.
